Q: I'm having problems installing the game using SETUP95.EXE.
A:  To solve this problem you will need to by-pass the Sold Out installer and install the game using the SETUP.EXE file which is on the CD ROM.

  1. Click START
  2. Click RUN
  3. Type D:\SETUP.EXE then click OK (D:\ represents the letter of your CD ROM drive, you should change this accordingly if your drive has a different letter assigned to it)
  4. Now follow the on screen instructions and the game should install.

NOTE: If you get a further error: "SETUP.EXE - Unable to Locate DLL" The dynamic link library DSETUP.DLL could not be found in the specified path.

Please do the following:

  1. Click START, PROGRAMS, MS-DOS PROMPT.
  2. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt type: copy D:\DIRECTX\DSETUP.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  3. Once the message appears "1 file(s) copied" type EXIT (Again, where D: represents the letter of your CD ROM drive)
  4. Now launch the installer and the game will install fine.

Q: When I try to install the game using SETUP.EXE I get the error "SETUP.EXE - Unable to Locate DLL" The dynamic link library DSETUP.DLL could not be found in the specified path.
A: What you need to do is copy the file DSETUP.DLL from the \DIRECTX on the CD ROM to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. To do this follow the instructions below.

  1. Click START, PROGRAMS, MS-DOS PROMPT.
  2. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt type: copy D:\DIRECTX\DSETUP.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (D:\ represents the letter of your CD ROM drive, you should change this accordingly if your drive has a different letter assigned to it)
  3. Once the message appears "1 file(s) copied" type EXIT
  4. Now launch the installer and the game will install fine.

Q: Having problems with Broken Sword 2?
A: If your having problems with Broken Sword 2, please download the game update from the Downloads section on this page (only works with 8Mb or more).

Q: I have no logo or intro sequence; no music or speech (but sound effects still work).
A: In your config.sys file there will be a line along the lines of:

DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\TAISATAP.SYS /D:CD1 this should be changed to;

DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\TAISATAP.SYS /D:MSCD001

In the autoexec.bat file there will be a line:

MSCDEX /D:CD1 this should be changed to MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 after re-booting the problem should be fixed.

Q: Installation fails with error message "T:\PeteE\cd1.id contains an invalid path".
A: Map the CD-ROM drive to a letter other than M.

Q: Error message when attempting to save - cannot write to C\Program files\Broken Sword\Saves
A: This is caused in Windows Vista when users do not have the necessary administrative privileges. Please ensure you are launching the game with administrative access - you can check this by doing the following:

  • Go to ‘My Computer’ and right-click the drive where the disc is located
  • Select ‘Explore’.This should bring up the contents of the disc
  • Look for a folder named ‘SETUP.exe’ or similar
  • Right-click this folder, select ‘Properties’ and look for the compatibility tab. Select this and ensure you have 'run as administrator' selected. Then launch the game.
